Project: Wier senior center, Ebnat-Kappel

This year's Christmas message features the Wier senior center in Ebnat-Kappel, which was built using a large amount of local wood from the surrounding forests. The municipality of Ebnat-Kappel has realized a pioneering building concept for inpatient care and assisted living on the existing site. A well thought-out construction and fire protection concept was the basis for an economical care building with load-bearing wooden columns and visible wooden ceilings, which was completed at the end of 2023. The newly created senior center offers an attractive home for 94 people.

This flagship building is impressive proof that it is possible to source timber regionally from local and surrounding forests, even for large-scale construction projects. Many municipalities themselves own woodland and therefore have access to this valuable raw material. The spruce, fir and beech trees that once grew in the surrounding forests are now used as supports, beams, walls and ceilings in the building program. Natural material - used locally - processed, refined and installed regionally. This is how climate protection works today. We have also documented the project in the current Timber & Technology magazine, which was published in December.
