Where waste was once incinerated on the outskirts of Bern, a new neighborhood is now being built. A timber construction wins the architectural competition for the U1 building site with 350 apartments.
Between the Bremgarten forest and the Bremgarten cemetery was once the old waste incineration plant KVA of the city of Bern. After the new construction of the plant in Forsthaus West, there is space for a new residential quarter on the site of the old KVA: Holliger. 350 apartments for 500 to 600 residents as well as areas for district-compatible work uses and leisure facilities will thus be created in a location close to the city center.
The Baugenossenschaft Aare Bern held a competition for the U1 site using a selective procedure. The project "Here comes the sun" by the ARGE Team Beam with FritschiBeis Architektur and Space Encounters is the winning project. The architects have created a striking building that meets the specifications of the client and convinces with innovations.
In terms of construction, the architects propose a wooden building with ceramic panel cladding. Due to the materialization with predominantly wood, the project scored very well in terms of construction (grey energy) and thus the SIA 2040 target achievement. Timbatec was allowed to advise the ARGE Team Beam in the planning of the timber construction. Together with the architects we are happy about the victory of "Here comes the sun".
